Interviewing to fit into the existing company culture is literally why this industry is statistically white, male, and privileged. People are biased towards homogeneity. And when people back it up as “all about fit” and “trusting their gut” in interviews, it reeks of bologna; justifying internalized biases to keep the comfort of status quo. It’s one of my major issues with this industry...
I will say this: I moved to a new state to join a sleek shop like this. The posturing-cool-kid-vibe was exactly that. Posturing. It was fun to join the table for a while, but shallow is shallow is shallow. I was little more than a token. A few months later, I found another shop that cared (if ever so slightly) more about my brain than my branded tees.

Thanks fishes. Seriously this and above comment made me think hard. I was this close to saying yes and just jumping in but I've taken a step back and slowed the convo down until I'm absolutely certain it's the right fit.

Whenever I interview at an agency, I already know whether or not I want to work there based on the percentage of employees wearing beanies or snapbacks indoors.
The thing is, I know I'd be interested and excited in the type of work I'd be doing there but somehow I don't feel like I fit the bill personality wise.
Yeah, it’s because you are. If they liked you in your interview, you’ll fit in there.
