Realize that if you do what Sapient says, you risk burning other bridges
Getting promoted within the same company is always going to be less than what they'd pay someone coming in fresh. Years ago, I was promoted to acd from ad, and they gave me 40k more than my ad salary. While that was a vast improvement, I was getting paid far less than other acds. Sapient is 100% right about bargaining power and confidence, and no, you don't have to be a twat about it, so it doesn't have to mean burning bridges.
Validate why you deserve it with hard facts on how you make the company money, retain clients and lead a happy team. Pitch yourself.
just ask? Give them a ball park on what you want before they come to you. If your direct supervisor likes you, they will try. Don't threaten to leave, just ask. Don't run through every single win, just ask. Directness has always paid off for me. If you don't ask, there won't ever be a negotiation 🤷🏻♂️
Get other offers and be ready to walk. Gives you (and superiors) better ability to rationalize your promotion. Just went thru this myself.
You've made it to ACD and never been promoted, what makes you think it'll happen this time? When you've promoted people, were any of them able to negotiate? I've had people try that with me, and it doesn't go well with my boss.
Have them consider the cost of finding someone to replace you and get them up and running. I bet that loss in productivity is not to far off the cost that would keep you there.
Thanks @sd1. I was a little puzzled when I read that when you get a promotion there's no room to negotiate. But like my op said any promotion/jump I've gotten is from leaving and taking a new role.
