I've noticed that some parts of applications are optional – things like my GPA or the exact dates I attended school. Does filling out these non-required fields benefit me, or do hiring managers typically not care about them?

Only matters if it is exceedingly relevant to the position, in my opinion. Unless you have just graduated, GPA doesn’t make a lot of difference. The only case to fill it out is if you A) had a really good one B) don’t have much else to your name yet to put on an application.

I’m careful with optional fields, especially when they might trigger age bias. I don’t mind being transparent, but there’s no reason to make it easier for a recruiter to make assumptions based on how long ago I was in school.

If the information is optional I can't imagine anyone would care one way or the other. Just make sure you fill in what's required, and make sure it's all accurate. If you have something exceptional to mention, that's what a cover letter is for.

Think the majority don't care. It's "nice to have," but if it's not mandatory, it's an option. I would only include it if it makes you look exceptional, and maybe not even then.

Your GPA doesn't matter in the real world

Someone on LinkedIn expressed disappointment about the lack of diversity from the big law firms in TX that were posting pics of their summer associates. A managing partner commented that he thought the post might be about a pic he posted (12/14 SAs were white). He tried to defend this by saying that they had LGBT and socioeconomic diversity. The fact that he recognized that his pic might be part of the problem says it all. Law firms need to do better. Sorry, I just wanted to rant.

I’m one of the only attorneys in my Texas firm that had electricity, internet, and water this week. I was warm and comfortable but still could not get any work done because things going on in the outside world are distracting. When I try to work, I feel like I can barely hold a thought in my mind before I get the “wait, what am I doing again?” feeling. I just want to know, I’m not the only one that struggled this week to do any work, right?
