#stepuptothetable is about helping local restaurants who are struggling during these times. I have seen numerous linkedin posts with videos where people challenge each other to step up to the table & buy meals & gift cards from their community restaurants. A great way for those of us who are more fortunate to support business & keep people employed.

With a recruiter, early and often. They may only give you a range, but that range should be within $10,000. If they say commence with experience, ask them for what they’re willing to pay for someone appropriate for the role that their offer. It shouldn’t be a game. This is supposed to be an open agreement. In many states now, however you do not have to share what you got at your last role because that has nothing to do with what someone is worth to fill this role successfully.

Appreciate this! Thank you. It does feel like a game sometimes so that’s a great reality check
Bring it up early. You don't want them lining up interviews with companies that can't meet your salary requirements. Give them the number you need and let them take it from there.

Thank you!
Wait if they aren’t bringing it up right away. Compensation is a huge factor, but it comes off poorly when you’ve barely started the conversation.
Right, unfortunately, something you really have to consider is this job market.
If it doesn't come up early in the convo, you can expect the offer to be low or below market. Go ahead and mentally put you financial line in the sand.

Great point.
Always on the first call. If they don’t bring it up, I bring up my expectations.

Great point. I have been emailing so far instead of a call, it does feel much easier to do it on a call
I like to bring it up early. I don't like to waste my time or their time if the pay range for the role isn't in line with what I am looking for.
Unless it's a job I am really interested in or a company I am really interest in, I won't apply for a role if the salary range isn't included in the job posting.
If you're on a phone call, it's a good conversation to have, but it's kind of off-putting if someone replies to an email with "what's the salary band?" and nothing else. Always better to cover it early on, though, to make sure you're on the same page. I'd say especially coming from Bain (or any of MBB), a good recruiter is going to know that comp there is usually at a premium and they would want to make sure you're aligned from the jump.
If it’s an independent headhunter or third party recruiter, then salary expectation should be discussed on the very first call. If you are dealing with an inside recruiter that works for the hiring company AND you are a very strong candidate, it’s in your best interest to withhold salary discussion until later. After they’re convinced you’re the perfect candidate.
Depending where you are in your career it would help to have an idea of where you place yourself on market salaries. But if in doubt check as there exists so much resources out there to guide you.

You should bring it up asap

Thank you!
Play the game as well. You should be able to get a sense of how much they will pay you thanks to Glassdoor.
If you’re unsure and do not want to waste your time, ask upfront.
If you’re trying to get the job and potentially ask for more, then you could impress them in the interview and ask for more at the end.
But big corporate companies will have an upper limit and will not budge. So you have to be ready to negotiate at the end.l as well. But generally if they want you and make an offer, even if you ask for more they will tell you if it’s possible or not. I like this better by phone at that time because they have an answer to give you immediately.
