I get why your boss reacted strongly. We’ve all seen how quickly things can escalate when stuff like that isn’t addressed early. But I think the way you handled it sounds fair - you set a boundary without going nuclear.
I don't care for being called anything that the speaker wouldn't call a person of another gender. (So, waitresses that call everyone "love" are fine.) That said, if they genuinely seem to show respect otherwise, don't limit it to people who they seem to be physically attracted to and take feedback well, I agree I wouldn't consider it a firing offense. Especially if everyone gets SOME kind of nickname from them even if it's different. And especially if they're not in a position of power -- it gets worse when the recipient might not feel safe to say something.
I generally hate it. No one under 70 should be calling anyone not their partner that never mind in professional settings!
I think it crosses a line at work, even if it is said casually. You handled it with more grace than i would. Talking to him directly was strong, but I also understand your boss’s reaction. people are tired of letting that stuff slide.

It could happen to anyone.
I think you handled this so well, it’s completely inappropriate for someone else to call you by these nicknames! I’m glad you managed to sort it out though without them getting fired
