It's all about what kind of learning curve you're ready for. Your previous experience will surely come in handy, however, solar energy engineering requires specialized knowledge in photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar thermal technologies, and energy storage. Learning about solar cell materials, system efficiency optimization, and how solar technologies interact with the grid could be a steep learning curve. Are you okay with that?
The shift would be like most others, as long as you have a good foundational knowledge you should be able to build off of that. I would say to start talking to people and try to find somebody in the business and then figure out what technical things you would need to look at.
