This shouldn’t be news to people but it is.

directors deck is usually a lot vibier than what you showed clients, no need for strategy to be involved but you should outline the problem, it’s basically:
title page
section 1 - hi, we’re so excited about this project and you’d be a great partner for this one, maybe team intro but this could just be one slide
section 2 - here’s what the campaign is about, tee up the problem as a human problem, not just a business one if you can
section 3 - intro to the product/idea/thing that
section 4 - scripts for all deliverables
section 5 - callouts / watch outs/ guidelines (eg if someone always does the brand’s VO, if a character needs to look happy, etc)
then one slide that’s like thank you for considering this one, can’t wait to walk you through it live
then a thank you slide
This is kind <3 and a sound outline!
Your producers should be finding directors to show you. But you can also suggest ones to them whose work you’ve liked on other ads and seem like a fit for your project.
Ask to see former director decks your agency has made and model yours after them. But generally you gas up the director a bit, pique their interest with what your project is about, and share initial thoughts on tone and style with an emphasis on collaboration to flesh it out further.
You rely on your agency producer, because they’ll be best positioned to make sure your director suggestions align with the budget and logistics.
That will help avoid the mistakes juniors often make, which include (but are not limited to): reaching out to directors directly (who are out of budgetary reach); reaching out to director/influencers directly (who then blow up the client’s social media when the resulting campaign, not shot by them, looks too much like their signature style); reaching out to unaffiliated directors found on social media who turn out to be unaffiliated because they’ve burned so many clients in the past; suggesting directors who are notoriously difficult to work with and whose past exploits contributed to an agency losing their AOR status; etc.
Making your suggestions to an agency producer, who will then vet and narrow down the options, will save a lot of time, money, energy and jobs in the long run.
This right here. Looking for directors on your own is great and shows you care about the work, but take your picks to the CD and producer. Do not reach out to anyone on your own… seen this go really bad
Bravo for your courage to admit a blind spot and seek guidance and mentorship. And the answer from the other reply is spot on. YOU GOT THIS 🦄
That’s where an agency producer comes in.
What everyone else is saying is true. But one easy way to look for directors is to just go to the websites of the big production companies and just going to the “Directors” tab. Far from an exhaustive list, but you could start with some of these:
MJZ, Caviar, Biscuit, O Positive, Prettybird, Park Pictures, World War 7, Furlined, Stink, Missing Pieces, Biscuit, Hungry Man, Anonymous Content, etc etc etc
These are all A+ companies. Only go here if you have money.
I can help as I rep for a prod co and have a fantastic list of directors. I agree that your producer should/ Could do this for you but if you are without a producer and been thrown into the deep end reps will fall all over ourselves to help. Seriously. Our entire goal is to help you and get work so feel
Free to send me a dm.
