My advice... run from them. They legally couldn't extend that offer without the position being vacant and they couldn't extend the offer out to any other potential candidate without the previous one turning it down. Something is off with their hr team and you should avoid them.
My advice would be to evaluate your current job search and financial conditions. If you can find another job fairly quickly, run away, If you don't have anything in sight I would take it temporarily and then run away. I would not work for a company that pulls these sorts of tricks.

I'd review them on Glassdoor and say they bait and switched you because that's essentially what they did. That's shameful behavior on their part and others deserve not to experience this same abhorrent behavior that you also didn't deserve, OP.
You can actually sue them for breach of contract. What they pulled is highly illegal.
No... but it does have to be actionable... and unless there was a fully executed, formal contract of employment, then an offer of At Will Employment can be rescinded or canceled by either party, at any time, for any reason (or, no reason, at all). Trying to sue, in this situation, wouldn't get off of the launch-pad.
What the company did is despicable and immoral... but at least, the OP found out BEFORE actually going to work for them.
After signing the letter is crazy. Unless they sincerely apologized or explained how that happened, I’d hesitate to sign another one from them. Mistakes happen, but me having to take a different position at significantly less is a big mistake.
Run. This is a horrible ethical "first step". It signals a total lack of integrity from the top down. How could you trust anything you are told there?
Walk away. You dodged a bullet.
Like Neo in The Matrix 😎
Do not feel obligated to take a lesser paying job. Especially after an offer letter has been agreed to, and signed. Know your self-worth.
Wow, that really sucks. I probably wouldn't take it just on principle because of the disrespect of that, especially after you signed the offer. But I guess it depends on how much you need a job and how the job search has been going otherwise. If you feel like you would take the lower position for less pay, I say go for it.
Yikes, ya that's a little much. I think you are making the right call to walk away.
You should give them something to think about and say, you'll get back to them with an answer after you speak with legal counsel.
Depending where you are, breach of contract may apply. But as someone in HR, this is a clear red flag - I would stay away. FAR AWAY.
Plus.. in today's world - you'd think a company like that would be worried about repercussions. All it takes is a bad glassdoor review or TikTok video detailing what the company did to cause serious damage to their brand.
You cannot sue them for breach of contract. A job offer letter is generally not a binding contract. Most offer letters state that employment is at-will and may be rescinded or changed at any time. A true employment contract would not include at-will or “not a contract” disclaimers and would be signed by both parties. While what the company did is unethical and unprofessional, it is not illegal.
Run
This is a shady practice that some do to get you to do the same job with same worklload at a reduced salary dont walk away run!
Respectfully response with “I have two words, one starts with F and rhymes with DUCK and the other is YOU!!!!
Why? Who would know except HR and the hiring manager 😂 I’ve been rogue in corporate for a long time and it’s not caught up with me yet.
The very same thing happened to me 2 years ago at a reputable global Drilling company. But at a $40,000 decrease in salary. I knew the individual they hired, He was fired from his previous company for DUI in a company vehicle. I never said anything but I did decline the offer.
No thank you. [Wow... Definitely a SIGN!]
They are committing employment fraud.
So, if you accept a job offer but change your mind before you start, then are you "committing employment fraud," or does that only apply when people do it to you?
Im sorry! Tell the to eff off!!!
You signed an employment agreement. End of story really...
It depends on the offer letter. My most recent one was an offer letter (containing the full T&C's) and once signed and returned, it constitutes my ongoing employment contract as well. Other offer letters I've had were not like that.
Offers can be rescinded legally where I live, signed contracts not so much, but most probationary periods have a set shorter notice period which they could easily use to move you on once hired.
Yeah, Kicks rocks, they don't deserve you.
Another company gaming prospective employees....I'd tell them to get bent.
Yeah no. Fk that. This is an integrity thing. They did not make this decision in a vacuum. RUN! You probably need a job like the rest of us, but don’t let them play you.
Agree, run! Unless you are about to be out on the streets, do not take this job. You'll hate every day you go in there and be suspicious of all. Yuk.
Nope! That would be a no for me. How do you extend an offer to someone, have them sign the offer letter, then tell them the position is filled. I wouldn't take the secondary job. RUN!
Listen,
know your worth, while you have been offered a job, it is NOT the one you applied to. That is a HUGE red flag, bait and switch tactic. They obviously want your skillset just at a discounted price.
If they are going to start off with these tactics then expect similar tactics at raise time and promotio time. Not to mention all the in-between.
i say pass but you have to decide if that is acceptable for yo.u.
