Just ranting, but I recently recruited for BCG as an exp. hire. It was an identical process as campus recruiting: I did not have nearly as much time to prep as someone in b-school. First round was the chat bot case which I was able to work through w/o any prior case prep. A week later I'm invited to the final round, and my actual interview is 3 days later. Unsurprisingly got wrecked on cases and had no time to chat about my exp. Not applying as a generalist, so it was actually relevant work exp.

Sounds like you were unprepared

like

Theirs** very late to notice but holy crap what a typo :(

like

What’s the problem lol? You could’ve started case prep months prior just like b-school candidates; timeline once you’ve applied is the same for campus and experienced recruiting

like

I agree that if it’s for a specific practice area you probably don’t need to do 100 cases in random sectors/capabilities, but it’s a reasonable assumption that they’re going to case you in your area. I just went through interviewing for my Bain exit, every in-house strategy interview I did (none generalist, all specialized) had a case. I think cases are just standard for strategy jobs. It’s still okay that you didn’t want to prep, just adding color that I don’t think cases for strategy roles is out of the ordinary.

Totally can’t speak to EH process vs campus, but generally agree that different processes makes sense

like

Can’t speak to BCG specifically, but the point of cases isn’t to test your industry knowledge, even for experienced hires. That can be tested more easily and thoroughly through the regular interviews and your resume.

The point of cases is to test your general problem-solving skills, particularly when ambiguous and when you’re under pressure. It’s also a good test of how much preparation you’ve put in, which is a good proxy (fairly or not) of your discipline, work ethic, and how badly you actually want the job.

Cmon bro, if I applied to a job on tech and turned up to the interview without having prepped any coding questions I would look a fool. If the cases were in your subject area too then that’s even less of an excuse.

like

Not going to talk about the case, but it was definitely not relevant to the industry

You sound both lazy and not very sharp. Is this whole post a joke?

likefunny

Nah fam you're the joke. Associate with some silly subject expert badge? You spend too much time on this app friend. Keep up the hivemind thinking up though, hope you find an original thought someday.

Consulting work is much different than industry work, this is why even with your relevant work experience you still go through the same route. Yes your experience is valuable but you won’t be operating the business. Success in industry and success in consulting are vastly different.

It’s a valid argument to challenge the recruiting method for experience hires. I still think you’re wrong but it’s a valid argument. Now, you had all the tools you needed to know what the expectation was, and showing up unprepared is 100% on you. If you didn’t want to do the work why even apply?

You did have time to prep, you just didn’t want to do it.

like

Like B2 said, there are a lot of resources available to you. You said you got your MBA and I’m assuming from a target school since you said you chose not to recruit at that time. Your alumni network probably could’ve helped.

Bottom line is, these companies hire a ton of people for the same role every year. Hiring the right people is pretty much a core function. There is a reason why they do it like this.

I’m not saying the process can’t be improved as they are actively making changes to remove bias during the process, but this is a competitive job and the interview process is and should be hard. Just because you have industry experience that’s not necessarily equal to better performance when compared to someone without it.

I'm reading your responses now and wow you come off like a huge tool. Making constant excuses, complaining, insulting deloitte for no reason.

BCG dodged a bullet with you, please do not apply to mck

likefunny

I was in a similar situation: exp. hire with ~10 YoE in an industry + an MBA. Grinded 10 hrs / day over winter break prepping cases for just the BCG interview and got the offer.

like

Took me 2-3 months with a full time job.

like

From reading your comments OP, sounds like you are a little unsure if your lack of effort was the right decision. I just got an MBB offer as an exp hire and have a shit ton of stuff going on in my life - work in consulting, newborn baby, and home renovations. I worked with my partner to figure out how I could carve out 10 hours/wk over my 4 week TOTAL recruitment timeline. Those 40 hours were totally worth the $100k TC bump and future exit opps / partner comp

likeuplifting

Please consider McKinsey or Bain instead

You can always ask to move your interviews back..

like

You're saying 3 months wasnt enough time to prep? How much do you think is fair?

like

Sorry how it shaped up. FWIW even if you come with tons of experience, casing is make or break to the decision.

Cases are how we judge problem-solving skills. You need to ace behaviorals AND the case to get hired, regardless of entry point.

I'm not interested in staffing someone who has experience but can't solve a novel problem.

how long after applying did you hear back

I would do 3 cases a case and cancel my vacation (given that I am not married)

Could’ve started prep earlier or applied when you were ready… and if I wanted to be extra candid why did you not do well in cases related to your actual daily job?
