My company recently changed my commission plan by capping half of our variable payout, resulting in the sales reps making roughly 30% less on commission checks when going over quota. Obviously this has crushed spirits, and I’ve lost any motivation to crush quota. How do I stay motivated ? Or is it time to find a new job?

Half? That's too much! I think that's your sign to start looking for another job.

The whole point of commission is to motivate salespeople, so when its taken away or reduced its natural to feel that way. I would start looking for another job if I could not negotiate increased base salary

like

Time to find a new job. You can try renegotiating your salary, but if you're still going to be making less over quota I would get out of there. This move from a company makes no sense and only demoralizes people and causes them to leave.

Going over quota should always be ACCELERATED - not nerfed. That’s the whole point of setting targets and celebrating when you exceed them! Sounds like a leader somewhere trying to pinch pennies. Did any reps recently crush their number and take down big checks?

like

Yes! Sorry for the delay. I had a huge commish check July and august and then we were nerfed for this month. Also great use of the word nerfed I laughed at that.

Why did they do that? It would be hard to keep people motivated after a move like that.

I think I would be finding a new job. That sounds like the company is just being cheap. I would be really upset by this tool

Asking for a friend:
My friend received two job offers for Account Executive roles: a Mid-Market role with Confluent and an Enterprise role with ThoughtSpot. He’s conflicted because Confluent is a more established company, ThoughtSpot is Pre-IPO. Confluent is a lucrative product to sell and has established SDR reps so there’s a good blend of inbound and outbound sales. Thoughtspot is more of a startup culture where most of the sales comes from outbound and it’s a tougher sell.

I saw some sales managers discussing hiring strategies, especially for entry level roles (e.g. SDR, BDR).

One strategy that came up was having the applicant do 90 minutes of cold calling into real prospects with the hiring manager coaching.

What do you think of this approach? Would be curious to hear from both hiring manager perspectives and from candidate perspectives.

Hello, first post here. Outside sales, merchant services/card processing. I’m primarily a welder but I work 4 10-hour shifts typically then I try sales the last three days. I’ve done it long enough to where I’m confident and comfortable going to new businesses, establishing some rapport with business owners. But it seems like a lot of businesses see this as a waste of time, even adding services and cutting costs. I guess either I’m looking for advice or considering not doing this anymore.
