From what I hear PDM is straight up contractor work which means once you are done at the current project if D has no place for you they put you out the door. Some people are fine with this uncertainty but I suggest you start looking for a new job 3 months before your project ends to be on the safe side. Use the Deloitte brand to your advantage but pdm is not a place you should expect to spend years of your career in…
I think your odds might be a little better than someone off the street but would recommend just applying to a traditional model job instead of trying to transfer internally
Hi OP! I have worked with PDM practitioners for many years - and I've always made sure my PDM folks had a home by helping them find a new project. My commitment to them is very important given the no bench nature of the model. Just sharing this to help you feel a bit better!
I would say do not take this role. It’s better to wait and get a more secure position.Your career in Deloitte will depend on the mercy of your project manager
This is a contract role.
From my experience and knowledge at Deloitte, they are not incentivized to hire you into a different track and pay you more if they were able to hire you for a role that costs them less.
Delivery center (USDC) consultants are not even able to transition into the traditional consulting track and they are full-time roles that aren’t project dependent. They can pay delivery center roles less for the same work so why would they decide to pay them more just because they want to move to a track with better career trajectory?
You will not be able to transition to another area at Deloitte easily if at all from this BUT it’s a great brand to have on your resume and you could probably apply to a different area at Deloitte if you got another job somewhere else after this one.
More projects are staffing PDM resources more now cos CORE folks are too expensive. As long as you understand the differences and are ok with it. I’d suggest asking how many years is left on the contract so you at least get a sense of how long you’ll be on that project before having to find something else.
What did it say?
As a PDM practitioner I agree w D4, it’s certainly not as stable as CORE but you’d only really have serious issues if you have a *very* niche skill set required solely by whatever project you’re hired for (unlikely) and you put in no effort whatsoever to look for work
I am PDM, had an iffy contract situation for the one I was hired for and was without work for a few weeks - now am on an entirely different project/account and am essentially treated as a CORE consultant. Not sure what sort of position you’re applying for, but essentially if you’ve got project/senior leadership on your side you’ll do just fine. If you have any questions feel free to PM me
