Emotional support animal or service animal? There is a difference in both the training and owners.
If the lady was unfazed, perhaps she untrained the dog not to pee like that. Or she just doesn't give the dog the opportunity to pee elsewhere and the dog actually couldn't hold it in any longer.
That’s a tell-tale sign it’s a fake service dog. Because there’s nothing like having the privilege to fake a disability, when many have no other choice.
It’s truly an awful situation. Airlines charge $$$$ and have enormous restrictions for flying with a pet unless it’s a service animal. I had to pay $350 to bring our dog with us on a flight recently that we couldn’t avoid. So, to get around it people claim “emotional support” animals which have a loophole. This is not the same thing as a service animal as there are no certifications or training standards. Then the emotional support animals behave badly and make it hard for people with actual needs to bring their dogs on flights etc. I’m sure there are people who do have serious emotional needs and have well trained support animals. But unfortunately others have abused this system so much now that things like what OP described are sometimes a best case scenario— let alone bites and aggression that can happen. Everyone things that **their** dog wold be fine but rules about crates and carrying case exist for a reason. SO much judgment on this owner for being so selfish.
Congress needs to change the ADA to end this for once and for all. Private business should be able to require a support animal to be registered with a state or federal registry, and those registries should require a valid physician note. I’m an animal lover - I love seeing the bomb squad dogs and service animals, I always smile when I see them - but there should be limits. If you want to bring your pet, pay the fee. And let’s get pets out of grocery stores as well, it’s getting to a disgusting level in LA.
No, that is absolutely not the legal standard. Public accommodations (e.g., restaurants, theatres, stores, health care facilities), are allowed to ask only two questions to determine if an animal is a service animal: (1) Do you need the animal because of a disability? and (2) What work or tasks has this animal been trained to perform? Anyone can lie. There’s no legal registry requirement per the ADA.
I raised services dog, that would never happen if the dog was working with their vest on unless the owner told them to go to the bathroom.
