Just wondering if anyone has insight.
How come working in foodservice has such a high physical and mental demands. Carry large loads of orders or stock, dealing with angry or temperamental customers. Why does every place want to pay minimum wage?
I swear being a construction worker would be easier. Not to diminish what they do..
Ive been a dietitian with creds, lunchlady, organized caterings for large groups, literally grew up in a resturant above a kitchen.

I completely get it. The sad truth is a lot of employers still see foodservice as "low-skill" work because it’s been undervalued for so long. The perception is so outdated, people have no idea how much we juggle behind the scenes. You’re not just serving food; you’re managing chaos and keeping an operation running under pressure every single day. It’s real, demanding work, and it deserves a lot more respect.

I know right?? There is so much to do. It’s true, foodservice is incredibly demanding. Part of the problem is that many people underestimate the skill, pressure, and physical toll involved. Because it's seen as “unskilled” labor, employers often justify low pay, even though the work requires speed, endurance, and emotional control. Which is sad, for sure. Are you thinking in pivot to something else?

It’s because people don’t want / can’t afford to pay more for their food. I think fine dining places you make more $ because the meal is more expensive, but those places are struggling right now because people are not doing well financially in general.

Check the overtime laws for your state!!

I just recently worked 58.6 hours in a week, weekly pay, nice OT profit right? Depends on where you live.

In Iowa, there is no Overtime pay mandate, the overtime pay is at the discretion of the business. I received 58.6 hours of base pay for the week.

If the company makes less than $1 million per year or does not engage in intercontinental sales, the company is not required to pay the overtime rate of time and a half, just your base rate.
