I travel to both locations frequently. ATL is bad on 2 to 3 key roads and during rush hour; LA is bad traffic - all roads, all the time.
LA is literally the worst in the country. There is no rush hour. The 405 can be bumper-to-bumper at 3 AM.Atlanta is nothing, ever after the freeway burned down.
LA is worse than NYC for traffic. Long commutes are one reason I moved out of SoCal and as a consultant they were worse as my local clients were all over the place - Ventura to Orange County to the San Fernando Valley to downtown LA to Riverside so it was hard to pick one optimal location to live. In my later days there I lived just south of LAX and requested mostly travel projects, which alleviated commutes that could vary from 1-3 hours each way but then again constant travel introduces other issues. The week I spent 30 hours in my car in traffic - after traveling for 6 months straight and being happy to be home for a change - was the week I decided to try a different city (now in Denver).
I love SoCal but as a consultant whether you can put up with getting around will depend on where your clients are in relation to where you live.
Stories are as bad as you hear. Hate being on local projects. Took me an hour to get to the client for 11 miles. And I got to the client at 7:30am lol. All local roads since taking the highway took longer! *Grew up in ATL and lived in NYC before moving to LA.
Agree with ^. I lived in Hermosa Beach for four years. Just south and west of LAX. Worked in el segundo. It was amazing. No traffic, easy to get in and out of airport. If I ever had to go north or south more than five miles I was literally lose my mind. Any time of day to include 2am it was atrocious and mind bending. So either try to live near where you work or right north or south or airport (it is situated near awesome beach locations anyways) and you will be fine. If you have any sort of commute you will be pretty miserable. Trying to even trek north up into Santa Monica is painful let alone getting downtown etc
Also flying in/out LAX is a nightmare. Unless you are flying at 6am and then it’s ok. 😂
Only place I’ve been that compares is Mexico City. Bad all the time. Nothing in Europe compares even though rush hours can be bad. Haven’t spent enough time in Asia to judge.
*I was staffed in ATL for two years
LA is WAAAAAAAY worse, everywhere, all the time.

I moved from LA to ATL about 8 years ago. ATL is bad. LA is worse
Working in ATL now and for past 10 months. Traffic is not bad at all, except for accidents, and during rush hour on only 3 highways. People in ATL complain a lot, but most of the time it's not bad. I live in DC, lived previously in SI Valley, Hermosa Beach before that and Boston prior to that. All are / were much worse than Atlanta. Atlanta isn't even up to Chicago standards of traffic.
