OK I have a suggestion. Consider working at TraderJoes. I know it’s only $16/hr. Bit it’s money you need. You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment. You’ll enjoy going to work every day. It will take your mind off your lack of success.
You can still apply for jobs and even accept freelance gigs. And you will love the team you work with every day.
Do you think you have any better options? TJ was the best job I ever had and I had a great adv career.
It’s certainly an option, but it would take time away from my ability to continue the search and handle the few (not enough) freelance contracts I still have, and it still wouldn’t pay my mortgage and bills.
I’ve considered other non-writing gigs too, this is the issue I keep running into. For the time it takes away from job hunting, I need it to pay my mortgage.
I wish I knew. I freelanced as a copywriter from 2019-2024 and the first four years of that was amazing. I swear, when the clock stroke midnight on NYE 2024, all the freelance work turned into pumpkins that shriveled up immediately. And not just for copy. It’s all across creative.
I’m a new-ish mom with a kid to support, so I bit the bullet and went back to a full time role at an ad agency last year. Had to drop down to senior level copy from creative director to do it, which was painful given all the years of hard work it took to reach that level. I’m underpaid and overworked for a title I am objectively overqualified for, and I feel lucky literally every day that I have a job to complain about.
I worked 10 days this year.
Same here
Just hit a year this month. Longest drought ever.
Re the Trader Joe’s suggestion - reminded me of this wonderful post about this: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/mark-keefer-editor-drummer_im-a-film-editor-at-least-thats-what-activity-7310074024154312704-J0Sw?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios&rcm=ACoAAACVluoBktl5KTQ3kqp1RqW8WDw5d1QRnO4
I hear you. That was my entire last year. I’m done. I don’t know what I’m going to do but it sure as shit isn’t this.
How are you surviving? Asking for myself as I worry I’m on the same trajectory. And I only have around 30K saved.
