I don’t know what your points currency is but assuming a credit card, “maximize” (points to cents) is always going to be converting the points to an airline and booking a discounted business or first class ticket.
Everyone is unique, I prefer to spend my miles/points on high end vacations. Others prefer stretching them as far as they can go and use them at a Courtyard.

How flexible are you? Usually, flight wise, the best of best conversions are pretty hard to book and will be a bit more of a “hassle” (advance booking for over a year, checking their ticketing websites for days, multiple layovers to destination, ticketing only on the phone, etc). There are many business now do this - withholding those good conversion rewards ticket and sell them to people, which makes it even harder. If you prefer a more DIY approach without too much time invested and as few layover as possible, without needing to go through partnership booking etc, the conversion won’t be that good likely.
Hotel wise I think so far Chase point to Hyatt is the best conversion in general if you have a great Hyatt at your destination that might be the way to go.
