Creatives can completely blow your editorial budget if they keep experimenting or even worse, if they are unsure of themselves. Out job is to keep them on track and the job on budget. But you do this in a diplomatic and friendly way. Tell them you have enough budget for 1 more day (or whatever) and that we need to start sharing with their boss and then the client. It’s been this way forever.

And it’s the only way if you want to remain in this business. My creatives have maybe lived with their idea for 3 - 6 months or more. It’s my job to make it happen. I try to give them as much time as I can in the edits. It’s their baby.
I was trained under an OG from BBDO Detroit who worked on automotive thru the 80s and 90s. Even with their big budgets he always said first round get your changes in, second round make sure they were all made, third round better be the clients changes. Still to this day producers always compliment how easy I make their lives.
The creative team will edit forever if you let them. It is the producer’s job to rein them in.
As a producer and creative ops lead, agreed. And it’s one of the parts of the job of producer/project manager that will make or break you.
It is absolutely your job as a Producer to rein in the creatives and make sure the project stays on track timeline wise and budget wise . They can get indecisive , brainstorm and get emotionally attached to the cuts / edits . You have to TELL them in a diplomatic but firm way you have 1st cut to get all of their consolidated feedback . 2nd cut is to review changes mentioned in the 1st not give more and more changes. The 3rd cut is client review.
Too many cooks spoil the recipie. You have to rein them in and tell them they are beyond brainstorming stage now and they have to align on storyboards that were approved. You have to be clear saying the project is beyond budget and their creative indecision is causing bottle necks + it's costing project extra $$$ out of scope revisions ! Otherwise it's your butt on the line and you will get blamed for any delay or project going off budget!!
You are not their BFF , you are the producer! Be professional and respectful but reign them in !
