I just creat e the materials and consumables I am going to use and only make a formal lesson plan when being observed
Same. I spend my time focusing on what the students are going to need to succeed, instead of something they will never see or care about.
In general a tremendous waste of time. Yes I know what I am planning to do, and how I am planning to do it. I also realize that everything in life can change in a moment. There exists a finite amount of time to actually do everything we need to do. I do a decidedly minimalist effort on the process. Turn in things that no one actually looks at. I would love to actually engage in lesson planning, but that requires an investment that districts will not make.
At this point I try every day to teach my students the lessons they need to learn. It will
Happen or not, but what is on the things I submit will ultimately have a very limited role making that happen.
Yep. The lesson plan's in your head. The document we call a "lesson plan" exists mostly to appease admin.
Lesson planning is not an action that produces a document. You've got outcomes in mind, both the standard dictated by the state or district and the other goals you've got for your kids. You formulate activities that will help the kids practice those skills and build that knowledge. That's lesson planning.
When you write them down, particularly in a prescribed format, that's DOCUMENTING your lesson plan. If you've got good admin, they'll give you a lot of freedom in how you do that. If not, they may demand a laborious process. But either way, that's not lesson planning. Anything beyond the notes you jot to remind yourself what you're doing is just checking off a box for the admin evaluating you.
Rising Star
I don’t write lessons plans but I do create units & calendars to keep my on track.
I feel like I’m rewriting what’s already written.
Beginning of the year especially I have my days well planned out … i don’t like teaching straight from curriculum so I read through it and write out learning target and important questions/points I want to make as well as all strategies I need to cover.
If your curriculum already has a pre-made slide presentation, I like to just add learning targets and formative assessment and the end to that. I have used the 5 E format for math and loved it. (See template pic from internet to get the format/parts.)
Maybe it’s just that I’ve taught what I do for so long (12 years), but I don’t write out traditional lesson plans. I write about what I plan to do on each day but I don’t write about the standards/ objectives. I’m also lucky enough (knock on wood), that I’m not required to submit daily/ weekly lesson plans. The only time I write one out is for my yearly observation.
