Let’s say upper management suddenly implemented a policy where employees had to submit a detailed report every week to “justify their existence,” with the implication that failing to do so could be considered a resignation. How would you handle it? Would you push back, comply while quietly job hunting, or take another approach? I get that leadership wants accountability, but something like this seems more demoralizing than productive. Have you ever faced an unreasonable demand from leadership? How did you navigate it?

The article you shared aside, time reporting, doctor notes, time off/PTO requests, RTO, stealth security tracking tools to detect mouse jigglers and end-user productivity, badge swiping, personal performance tracking/PIPs — these are all things that can be seen as anti-trust, micro-managing, and unreasonable demands but are labeled as policy. Support the team the best you can and be realistic that no manager alone can fight the policy.

The issue with Elon's threats are that they're not coming from management. The administration is struggling in its court cases to explain what his role is, or who the actual administrator of this extra-legal department is. And let's be serious, this isn't about accountability, it's a threat in service to Elon's plan to dismantle parts of the government. So it can't really be compared to what happens in a normal organization with normal leadership.

And the answer to OP’s question is yes I had to submit weekly reports on what I’d done the week before. follow that up with quarterly or midyear reports for evaluations and of course, end of year reports for end of year evaluations.
This is the civilian world. It’s not the government world. Companies and agencies don’t even run on the same calendar!

I'm a marketer and I'm having a hard time getting my clients to listen to me.

I have been in marketing for 10 years now. I've worked with hundreds of clients and have been able to increase their sales by over $1 million each year.

But every time I go into a meeting with a new client, they ignore everything I say. They just want to talk about their product. They don't seem interested in learning how to market it better.

Newer manager here (18 moths). Recent org announcements and hiring holds have put major stress on my team. Some are hyper focused on all the bad, how do I get buy-in that this is temporary and we still have a job to do? I feel it’s more important than ever to show value vs being task takers.

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

I still believe i work at a good place but i feel like we’re losing focus. I feel my boss is leaving soon. It’s a mess.

You're a new manager with direct reports. One of your directs is very determined. You consider yourself a good manager so you want to help them grow. They are killing it and taking on an enormous of workload, and executing flawlessly. Do you let them continue killing it? Ask how they're doing? Or warn/advise them on how to avoid burnout?

I have issues “delegating” or simply assigning tasks, which as a Manager is a whole thing. Like I feel “bad” asking my people to do things that i know i can do but shouldn’t because it’s not up to me. When I assign a task i try to be super clear with instructions, give examples, help them get started…but I still feel bad. Idk. Anyone goes through this?

Hi. People Manager here. I've been one for 12 years now and I encourage my team to not be "yes" people. At this time, it feels like my manager wants me and my team to be yes people for her. How do I deal with this? I've never been a yes person and I don't preach this to my reports. I don't know what to do. Help?

It feels very telling that there are so few people in this group. Any thoughts on that? It feels like the vast majority of people managers only want the title and don’t want to worry about their people.
