To elaborate for OP: It is tough because you are expected to come in and hit the ground running and be fully competent at your job. Everyone ignores the fact that no matter where you came from, the systems at your new firm will be unfamiliar. Moreover, it is easy to forget that at least half the job, maybe even more, is learning how to do things the way your project managers want you to. No amount of experience can prepare you for personal preferences.
It’s not that bad, you just need to be aware of what you are walking into and be ready to adapt quickly. If you are good at reading and interacting with people you should be able to figure out the best way to approach each person you report to, but the ultimate goal is to find out how they prefer things done. Ask for examples of similar deliverables, ask for informal feedback and comments/tweaks on everything you submit, even ask about how frequently they want you to communicate and what you can do to proactively help out. All of this needs to take place within the first month or two of being there because the grace period for getting up to speed is much shorter. If you set a rule for yourself that you only need to be told something one time to get it right every time thereafter, you will be a superstar. Lastly, make sure you leave any outward signs of ego or overconfidence at the door. People resent a new experienced person who comes in and starts acting as though they already know how things should be.
EY 2, I’m coming in as an experienced hire senior. Is it really that bad?
Just need to tough it out and have a thick skin. Slowly people will recognize the value you bring to the table and hopefully someone will take you under their wing to make it easier. If things don’t improve eventually, then the place might not be long term for you.
For sure!
Agreed
I agree
Why?
PREACH EY 2!!!
Thanks EY2, I’ll keep this in mind when I start. I’m not too worried about the ego part, more worried about getting brought up to speed and struggling to keep up with everything
You guys rock! I’ve been at the current position for five months now and have not received very much positive feedback. The higher management only listens to whoever I report to but I don’t really get along with that person. The person has been with the firm a long time so my words sounds nothing at the firm...I am not motivated at all. What should I think/do?
