It pays off because they can actually do stuff and it lightens your load. You don't do it for recognition.
Still can't comprehend how someone is making the argument that as a senior you shouldn't develop your staff ahahaha
That shit pisses me off. I hate when people who have been helped don't pass it on and we lose what could be good people.
I am always nice to staff, but seriously ...pay off for who? pay off for the staff to get on the job training and pay off for the partners and the firm. As a senior who had to learn nearly everything on my own and is still on my own, I don't ever get any credit for developing staff. No staff ever take it to the partner to say oh I learned so much from senior, they always root their own horn and say they are "helping" the senior. Anyway, I can totally understand why some seniors are pissy
You're not too bright
Hey guys I always fill out the on the job coaching acknowledgements for seniors that have gone out of their way to develop me, and the partners all see the OTJC acknowledgements and take it into consideration when it's time for ratings
Sometimes new staff should try to figure things out more before asking - but most of the time I agree! My senior when I first started sucked.. But honestly I think a lot of the times this happens because the senior just isn't good enough and can't spare the time, which probably is more common for first year seniors- then again even semis should know to start mentoring the first years because that adds points to themselves and shows they know their shit. Point being- ALWAYS mentor your staff. Goes a long way
Develop ur stuff, help a human out !
I always make a point to thank those that helped me and give them credit where it is due... But maybe that is just me
^ agree. Isn't it part of senior's job title to "senior" the staff? OP can you pull the senior aside and talk to him/her? Maybe they don't even realize they're doing it.
From a senior 3 who invests in my interns and staff (even when they drive me CRAZY), that is not the right way. Someone should tell him/her to stop as that behavior does not represent our values. Put me on the horn and I'll set them straight 😊
^ or that they need so much handholding initially that it creates a lot more stress and more work ... and then they roll off to other engagements ... it doesn't really benefit senior at all to train staff, people treat staff nice only because they want to be nice.
I think it's best to be patient and try to teach but there are some things that make you wonder if they're putting any thought in before asking.
True!!!

@auditor 1 - So you develop your staff to help you deal with all of the shit that gets dumped on you throughout the year... So it for sure pays off when they get stuff done so you don't have to stay until midnight doing even more work. And partners don't really have much do with it at all. You manager is writing your review so that's the only person who matters and they will know if you aren't developing them at all
