Literally every American born creative, good ones, ones that I know are out of work. Meanwhile entire departments, especially at the holding companies are here on visas, imported, often by bypassing regulations.
As much as I despise trump, does anyone see this changing? I freelanced at a big shop earlier this year and in my group, both teams were South American, the cd team always South American, as was the ecd and cco. I was called the “local expert” It’s even like this in pharma now.

Are the South American guys good at their jobs? Are you?

It costs around 10k to sponsor a visa and you have to wait at least 4 months. I don’t think big holding groups like to throw money down the toilet so I think you might wanna check their portfolios and then check yours.

Try leaving the States for once, even if just mentally. Get a global view on the emotional connections that your role is to produce at a human, visceral level. Walk on tension and nuance for a while. Maybe you’ll find a job when you come back with a POV.

Day 1. Here we go

likesmart

There’s no real shortage in America. We have food, water, and jobs. Honestly, we don’t need to be incredibly creative to have a good life here. Our lives are much easier compared to those in many other countries. That’s not the case in poorer countries—they truly need to be creative to make money and build an honest life. I’m grateful to have people from around the world here. I learn a lot from them, the way they think, the way they use creativity to solve problems, and I’ve become a better creative and a better person because I’m surrounded by people from so many different backgrounds.

like

I just got hung up on the "bypassing regulations" part of your post because if you spent 5 minutes talking to anybody on a visa, you'd find out it is an extremely tedious, lengthy, detail oriented, burocratic process that you can't just half ass or bypass. There are thousands of rules and requirements, and you have to abide by them all.

Also, once you have all those boxes checked, you'd be surprised at how many South American creatives have put their life savings into sponsoring themselves (even harder than getting a job). They're here, and they want to prove all the sacrifices were worth it. Get em on your good side before making enemies. You don't know when they'll help you get your next job.

like

???? Fake job postings were around way longer than your original post issue OP. That’s called “recruiting” not hiring.

If a company would prefer to wait 4 months of processing to hire someone who needs a visa vs someone local who can start immediately, maybe the local person is not as good at what they do.

likehelpful

If that’s how you believe the industry functions, I applaud you

likefunny

Complex answer, likely wrong.

South Americans don't bring as much a political agenda to the work (woke or MAGA) and so do better work, as well as having a natural affinity to Latino Americans.

Simple answer, likely less wrong.

South Americans are the current "cool kids" and they'll work harder because they bring an immigrant mindset and feel the pressure to perform, which nefarious holding companies will be thrilled to exploit.

like

You’d work hard too
1- if losing your job meant deportment
2-you made on average 34% less than your counterparts

like

I’m a white guy from America and I have a job

like

OP is in essence no different than some maga dude who wants to close the border and complains about immigrants taking his construction job.

He’s unemployed and he needs someone to blame.

They more than likely got hired because they won awards. This industry is obsessed with awards and South American agencies are good at winning them. It's not a conspiracy to lay off Americans. As for bypassing regulations, what do you mean? You need a Visa to work in the US as a foreigner, and most foreign creatives are on 01 Visas which require a ton of references and proof of awards.

like

No, it’s the ‘Extraordinary Ability’ visa. I’ve got one and take coffee orders for the agency (which gets me a free cup on the tenth order).

like

It’s been a year at least that dozens of great creatives are out of work. I know a bunch of non-American among them, from Europe, South-America, etc.
I’m a white European guy, and I’ve been among the first to be laid-off in my previous agency. I don’t know if I’m a great creative, but I’m not American, so 🤷

likeuplifting

American born people ask for more money, immigrants don’t know how much they can ask so they get exploited. Advertising is known to be a exploiting industry for creatives. There is no secret agenda to get Americans out of jobs, it’s called capitalism.

like

This is a big contributor to why wages in our industry are stagnated

All of the foreign workers at my holding company are remote, not visa holders. As visa holders would be facing the exact same cost of living crisis as american creatives living in the big cities where holding companies are forcing RTO. At my company I work with many talented designers based in mexico who are paid ¼ or my salary to pump out the same quality of work as I can, and then im put in front of the client to present the work with an American accent.

Deportations wont solve this kind if business practice in our industry, and this will be the future of cost cutting. Production and dev are already being outsourced to india more often than not, creative is going to latin america. No one needs a visa to work for an american company without standing on american soil, and its a better deal financially for those creatives as well to stay in their home country.

like

You have a degree. You don’t count as “working class” so rural America doesn’t believe you because only THEY get impacted by capitalism.

like

You should tell that to the 34% of the working class literally called the “College-Educated Working Class”.

like

It’ll change if American labor gets cheaper, maybe?

Bye-bye

, I agree, it’s a messed up situation we should absolutely say bye bye to.

Maybe be less mediocre? And build a decent portfolio with smart ideas?

Or you can just get yourself a nice red hat and keep shitting on immigrants.
