Looking for a gut check for comp package (salary/bonus/commission/PTO) for paralegals and 1-3 year associates. Family law only. Small firm. Portland, OR. Inflation and labor market seem to be shifting comp expectations independent of hours, work product, or experience.

Trying to understand what would be a competitive salary should be for my position. I’ve been working as an AE at a rep firm in Los Angeles for the past 8 years. During that time, I’ve billed $178 million dollars in total—$97.5 million since the pandemic—and I’ve never not hit my budget. I’m told our profit margins are between 13-15%. My current comp structure is $110k base, $30k commissions and the promise of a $30-50k bonus if our budget is hit. Is this anywhere close to being competitive?

Is there an average number of billable hours for first year associates? I’m about 2 months into clerking and get barred in about 2 weeks and the firm I’m at has me set at a fairly high billable minimum. Curious what’s a fair salary in MA? Was just told that there is likely not going to be a chance for a raise during my upcoming performance review due to my salary already being “above average for the industry” based on my employer’s questionable research.
