First suggestion is to get your CFA. It’s basically a requirement now in asset management. While you’re doing that, try and move towards positions with more of a focus on investments and less operations. This could be at an RIA, private bank, family office, asset manager. The important thing to is to build experience in trading, portfolio management, manager selection, stock picking, etc. since this will move you closer to asset management and away from being a financial advisor or operations.
I can understand that. I'm looking at the various opps that the AM side might offer vs the seemingly unitary FA path, myself. I'm considering running my own firm at some point in the future and I'm wondering if the FA path fails in comparison with the AM to prepare me for that, especially since I'd like to do some international work.
