Got messaged by a C3 . ai recruiter. Read that wlb is bad and that the interview process is absurdly long, but the Glassdoor reviews are 4.2 and can't find actual hours worked posted by anyone. How's the culture really? I'd be aiming for DS consulting, something more functional but with DS/ML concepts as my differentiator.

How come you want to move away from consulting if you don’t mind me asking?
One element is the nature of the work I am currently doing.
The second is more guaranteed around WLB, I have a one year old daughter and knowing I’ll be around is important. I’ve actually never really struggled with WLB issues in consulting but the stakes are a little higher for me now

Plenty of room for generalists in industry director of analytics/bi/insights/... roles
Consulting experience is literally listed on many industry SM/AD/D+ level D&A roles. Leadership within industry likely has to use/understand consultants as well as the skills you have as a consultant to identify industry trends, create strategies, drive teams, and so on. I would not be so quick to say a consulting skillet is useless to industry. Hell, in many companies even the partners - who likely do nothing but just sell D&A work and do deals all day - have a lot to bring to an industry role because of the amount of people they know AND the fact they understand the broad industry and what it is trying to do (even though they probably have no hard skills left). That's senior leadership and executive work. Just think about it for a while... Even big technology companies have folks with a lot of soft skills. Not everyone is a SWE.
Sounds like what you REALLY need to ask yourself is do you want to be doing account and people management or do you want to be a technical specialist.
Yes valid points, I am perhaps downplaying the value of soft skills.
What’s missing from my question is the direction of travel in my current role. I am doing generic programme management with a decreasing analytics focus.
Perhaps the answer to some of those concerns is a more appropriate role in consulting.
