Anything less than 1,000 sq ft per head is really living in poverty… I wouldn’t go for less than 6k sq ft, and really would push for 8k sq ft

I have a family of 5 in a significantly smaller house. But we are in a major city not suburbs. Works for us.
300sqft per person is comfortable, 200sqft per person feels crowded. When I had 600sqft per person you can basically all be in your own space. Above 2400sqft I feel like you need cleaning staff or you’ll spend your weekends maintaining it. So you might ask yourself how separate do you want to be.
Family of 5 in a 2,600 sq ft, 4/2 home. I wouldn’t mind a 5th bedroom for an office but we have three living rooms so I might convert one. Plenty of space.
OP: we are family of 5: 3 adults and 2 kids with 3750 sq ft home. It’s spacious enough for never needing to move. We do have 2500 unfinished basement if at all we need more space, which I highly doubt.
600sqf per person is the right space.
It’s all relative. I grew up in a family of 6 in a 1300 sf home in Japan and we felt we had a large home. Now I’m in 5200 sf with a family of 5. Definitely too big!
We are a family of 6 in a 4,000sqft house. It is certainly large enough. I could easily reduce the square footage by 500 and be perfectly comfortable.
Thanks for the insight. I’m thinking a finished basement down the road would help alleviate some of the concern if it did feel cramped.
We have surprise twins on the way in addition to our 3 and 1yr olds, so I’m having to get creative.
We’re a family of 4 in 3700 sq ft. It all depends on how the rooms are set up. We have about 700 sq ft that’s very under utilized that I wish was set up differently (ours is on 3rd floor). But by the time the kids are a bit older and can use that space it won’t feel so bad
Thank you all for chiming in! Google says 600-700sqft per person and I was left wondering how I could afford a 4,200sqft house. It’s helpful to hear these examples to know what “feels” small or too big
Are you working with a builder and trying to decide from one of their floor plans?
Yes, but it’s a custom home builder so they don’t have plans. I’m shopping my own plans and bringing something close to the table, then they will make adjustments
