Looking to help my daughter live her dreams. She has a best friend in the UK and wants to live there to go to university. She has been accepted to the IT program of her choice. She is disabled, on SSI, and has a service dog. All she wants is a life so she has something in her life for when her father and I are gone. I don’t even know where to start. I believe that this will be cost prohibitive, but I am open to ideas from you all. Sincere thanks.

If it’s cost prohibitive, it seems like the wiser choice for her to stay closer to home and get her degree here vs paying for international tuition.

Maybe look into study abroad programs for a quarter/semester or a gap year if she wants to travel.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to invest in a community where she will live long term, unless she eventually is trying to relocate to the UK?

like

International tuition should cost less than the ridiculously overinflated prices for US school. However, while Europe has great universities there is higher likelihood to land a job in US if she goes to a US school.

like

UK universities are usually very inexpensive compared to American schools. The issue I believe is an international service dog. That’s the difficult part. Why did she choose the UK over US?

That’s a good point, there aren’t campuses in the same way. You’re probably going to be in a city competing with regular people for flats. Some of my uni accommodation was awful, including one place where we were released from our lease after 2mo due to faulty wiring. My friends had black mold. This was Oxford so quite a nice town objectively

like

See if the university she got accepted in has study abroad programs. She can hit 2 birds with one stone. Get her degree at a US school that can hopefully help her land a job, and also take advantage of studying abroad for a semester or two.

Not clear which pet you think will be cost prohibitive. For the dog, is this a true service dog? I would talk to the agency you got the dog from and see if they have experience with clients taking their dogs to the UK ChatGPT gives a good overview of the process to bring a service dog into the uk.

Not to mention the high probability of losing SSI Disability by living abroad for over 6 months and/or when becoming employed full time.

like

Not sure where she wants to go or what her disability is, but they don’t have the ADA friendliness we have. Many of the older housing don’t have elevators and even ground floor living usually have a couple of steps. The towns have older streets/infrastructure. The shops and public transit may not be very friendly for an unassisted person with a disability. You may want to see out a local disability support group where she is considering to get specifics from locals.

One of my first thoughts was along the lines of KPMG1 - will she lose her SSI if she is gone for more than a year. Also, would they require her to be part of a program that is “sponsored or accredited” by a US university.
