Check the wording of who from your employer needs to be a contact info. You may be able to have a trusted admin person be the point of contact if it doesn’t require they’re your direct manager.
It says “supervisor”.
Update: reached out to NBCE, who is doing the investigation, and they said they can avoid contacting my current employer if I provide someone else who can verify that I work there, i.e. a colleague.
They said someone that could externally validate my employment and who was not a family member or already listed reference.
Further prefacing that I like my current job and this move would be strictly for geographic preference. So if I can’t get a job in the state that I’m looking at, I will stay at this firm.

I’ve done this 3 times. You can put any partner as a supervisor. Your firm is going to find out if you get licensed in another state, your better off being honest and saying your seeking licensure to expand your opportunities.

Correct. I told them only that I was applying to another state’s bar because the bar will contact them. I think they know there’s a possibility I want to leave and now it’s awkward. There would be no other reason for me to want to be barred in this state…
