Manager gave me runaround about raise. Worked there for 2 years, no salary review. New hires were coming in at higher rates than me. Finally sent a screenshot of my negative checking account balance to my manager and CCd the Vice President and the Technical Manager and said hey this salary isn't tenable. 2 days later I got a 10% increase.

What a power move. It’s wild that it took that level of transparency to get their attention. The fact that new hires were getting more than you after two years of hard work is a huge red flag. You did what needed to be done. Congrats on the raise and I hope it continues!

So if I submit a picture of my bank account being a negative value, I can get a raise?

Sweet.

Make sure they know your worth and value. What can you bring to the company that others can't? What ideas do you have to help their business grow and become more successful?!

t's frustrating that it took such a bold move to get a fair raise. I’m glad it worked, but it shouldn’t take financial distress to be valued. Have you noticed any shift in how leadership treats compensation conversations since then? Curious if this forced their hand or sparked broader change.

like

Is this for real? And how did you know new hires were actually coming in higher?

I’m guessing the job posting since most include salary/pay range.

Oh wow, if this is real, that's incredible. Way to think outside the box I guess lol. I'm just curious if your screenshot only showed regular bills or what you sent along to them. Please share!

Bold move. It’s really very good it worked out the way it did and you’re quite lucky for that outcome. To others considering similar-I wouldn’t recommend this approach in general. You’re blessed that this turned out the way that it did, but there’s another sliding door with an outcome where this disclosure creates some question as to your judgment. At no point in any of the talent related roles I have held could I have seen this going well with leadership and resulting in a salary adjustment. Better approach is to benchmark your role (as best you can without access to salary studies comp teams use by using online and local network intel) and come to management with a data set and business case demonstrating that the market for the role has moved.

From what I understand, ethics is separate from legal. Legal violations have consequences, ethical violations don’t. What’s the point of ethics if there are no consequences? Sure when it’s convenient to be ethnical, everyone will be. It only matters when it’s not convenient. So should there be ethics set up with consequences like loss of job that applies evenly for everyone in the company including the CEO? Should their be financial consequences set up for smaller violations?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

Im a pastry cook with 4yrs experience and the average salary start for this position is now at $22/hr here in vegas, especially in the strip. But cooking/baking is not my passion. So im changing into veterinary medicine and im seeing that the starting rate for a vet tech is around $16-18. Why is that?? Why are people in the vet med industry being paid so low?? Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!
