Go to your bank where you have your checking/savings. You will probably need to get a “starter” cc and build your credit a bit, prior to getting some of the preferred CCs. Go with a no annual fee, probably best to get a cash back (most banks offer them) and after 6mo, you should be able to get most cards. I would wait until you have some evidence of income (job offer doesn’t qualify); so wait until you’ve had 2 direct deposits so that the bank has some evidence of income for underwriting.
What does telling us literally any of that information matter to the question?
Thanks D2. Only included the job offer info because I heard some banks gives CC if you show them your offer so looking for advice
Bank of America! Always. I came to the US 4 years back and had the same issue but BoA took care of it.
Follow Ask Sebby or Credit Shifu on YouTube. They have great advice on starter cards
I applied for the Deserve card. They give cc for international students. After 6 months I went for chase freedom. Try this link https://deserve.com/254A5
Discover actually had some pretty good cash back benefits and is pretty friendly to no credit history
Discover IT was a good starter card for me and has good cash back for me not having any credit at the time
Same thing happened to me when i tried to get the CSR. So i got the freedom first and after a while went for CSR. Its nice to have both anyway
Are you surprised? They’re not going to give you that kind of card with no knowledge of your spending habits and no proof of your income other than offer letter. Try something with your bank, capital one basic CC, or something. It took me getting a mortgage and a car loan, plus other good history to start getting significant limits on my CCs
Would support a point to go to the bank where you have checking account. Similar story, intern in 2013 and for first CC with my bank after I got full time offer. Still remember how low was the limit 😊, but it was a good start and now 5 years later I have couple of cards including CSR for 1 year.
Update in case anyone in the same situation finds this thread... after getting rejected from a few banks (including Petal!), I finally got approved for the Chase sapphire reserve as my first card with no credit score. The only thing I did differently was just that I called the reconsideration line and then found a really good private client banker. If anyone is going through the same struggle, DM me.
Nice offer, consulting firm?
Have you ever had a credit card? I used to have Amex before I moved to the us and they were happy to give me a card when I started my internship during bschool
I was in same situation and was able to get approved for a personal Amex after getting my corporate Amex. Built credit for about a year after that, then could get other cards.
Get a secured card first. You have no credit history regardless of your salary
Thanks everyone! These are all really helpful. I’m banking with Chase; if I go back right after the rejection and apply for the Freedom Unlimited would that potentially hurt my application?
Also - I think Amex has pre-approved Gold for my firm. Has anyone tried to apply for a pre-approved card with no credit history?
Did you try in person? Usually that can help if you have the written offer as well, keeping in mind you will likely have to go for freedom or freedom unlimited initially
