Career switching to PE investment side right after an MBA is almost a non-existent situation though. I went to a top 5 MBA and the very few who did go to straight to PE without previous IB all had family connections.
Pro
What will you be doing in PE?
Most shops have 3 types of functional roles
- investing
- portfolio ops / value creation
- back office / support
Tech implementation is like 1 thing a PE ops person does. Even the very large shops where PE ops gets split (e.g. GTM, tech/prod, etc) it’s a very narrow slice of the scope.
I mean you have a useful skill, I just think you’ll need to bring a bit more.
This would be more useful at a portco. If you are set on PE on the ops side, go to MBB post mba and build your generalist tool kit for 2 years then combine that with your pre MBA experience.
Aiming for more investment side on the deal team bringing actual experience with the products being invested in.
And obviously, I wouldn’t be jumping directly, I could consider doing IB beforehand.

They are not at all related.
It’s very true. Granted im a terrible implementation consultant, but I’ve done well in other types of work. I’m stuck really.
Yes of course it will help.
Someone tell me my back office experience wasn’t a waste of time pre MBA 😂
All due respect, its up to you to make it relevant not them to find it relevant. If you can build a narrative of how having implemented technology will make you a better investor in various technology businesses and help them understand why it differentiates you from other candidates then yes it will help. If you can’t identify and articulate the value to them then it won’t. Bottom line is EVERYTHING you do prior to the next role can have value.
Aww aren’t you a clever little director?
That’s awfully specific
Only if you mean that you want to work for a PE owned company doing tech implementations. You would be doing the same thing, whether the company is PE backed or a partnership doesn’t matter
Mean a fund that invests in growth stage B2B SaaS.
On the investing side? Unlikely...
I mean sure, it’s helpful on the margin to have a deeper understanding of the business / product, but you’ll be going up against people who have much more relevant experience such as i-banking.
Of course I’d never say never. But your experience is something you’ll have to overcome rather than something that is helpful.
For context, I had experience in the investment industry (equity and debt), CFA designation, top 10 MBA and undergrad and I was a LONG shot (who didn’t come close to getting it).
Of course a monkey could do what bankers do, but such is life my friend.
It won’t be the only thing you have. Just wondering if you had a comparable profile to others, whether industry experience aligning with the fund’s industry will help differentiate you. (Ie. you and candidate B both worked in IB at the same firm, but you have experience in IT and the fund is a growth fund investing in IT)
