Might be moving from NYC to Houston for my new role. Office is in downtown and I'll not have a car for the first few weeks/months. Commute might be 2-3x/week. Also SO needs a walkable neighborhood. Are there any good walkable neighborhoods which also have good connectivity to the downtown via public transportation?

No such thing as a walkable neighborhood here frankly. I recommend you both visit for a few days and you’ll see what I mean.

Recommend you Uber to work and back until you get your vehicle. Public transit here is nothing like NYC.

I want to add, as many others have said, this is not a walkable city, nor even a walkable neighborhood. Everything is very spread out and it’s HOT. You won’t want to walk even if it was walkable. A car in Houston is on equal footing with the need for a place to live. It is not a nice to have. It’s a necessity.

like

You need a car. Period. Don’t let commute to downtown be how you choose where you want to live. I rode the red line everyday for several years for my commute to downtown and got off at Main Street square. It was super convenient and dependable.

However after about a year, it was more convenient for me to drive down and park for ~$8 a day

like

Live in the medical center / rice village near the red line. The more into rice village you are—the wore walkable it is. That said- don’t get too far from the red line because these Houston summers are hot

Do not move here without a car, period. It is not like NYC, that isn't a feasible move. Even if you buy a 2005 Camry and drive it for 5-6 months until you get settled, you need something.

like

This.

Anyone recommending the bus system is clearly not from here 😂

The rice village route via the rail is your best bet

You need a car. A “walkable” neighborhood in Houston is barely that. Bike-able is probably more realistic, assuming you’re ok being target practice for cars (learn to keep your head on a swivel).

You will be able to find a neighborhood that has good access to downtown, either because they are near the train or they have a major bus route that goes to downtown. But that will be the extent of depending on public transportation, unless the time-sink required to use it to get elsewhere is acceptable by your standards. I used to use it, because I had little choice at the time.

like

Fwiw, what you save on city/state income tax alone will cover a new car monthly payment and insurance

like

Hahah welcome to Houston. It is not walkable.

Which part of downtown Houston?

The Heights might be a good option and Rice.

You can Uber to work but buses are available as well. You can see if renting a car is an option as you do need a car in Houston.

like

Plenty of options listed above. Just wanted to say welcome and that you’ll love it here

like

Really hard to live here without a car

like

Midtown would be good. Additionally downtown has some nice high rises

Midtown’s bar scene makes it too rowdy

like

I live in the Montrose / River oaks area and love it! The bus goes down all major streets into downtown. Feel free to DM directly, I also relocated here for work.

Do you have a budget?

Montrose, Midtown, Downtown, Upper Kirby
If you want to be here long term you will need a car, but you can get by if you’re staying in one of the nearby areas. Live near a bus or
Light rail line. I commuted without a car for over 2 years. Probably took an Uber twice, otherwise all bus. On weekends you’ll probably want to have access to a car for timeliness but daily for work you’ll be fine.

I’ve lived Downtown for 10+ years. Despite the fact that it doesn’t have a grocery store, almost anything I could want or need is either walkable or deliverable. I take the train to the Med Center for appts although that’s getting sketchier by the day. You’ll definitely need a car, but I think downtown probably affords you a little more flexibility if you won’t have a car for a while. I’d look on HAR for available rentals.

Get an apartment in the Heights. I lived there for 2 years right across from Metro bus 40 and it only took 30 minutes to ride to Downtown. Yes, a lot of Houston isn’t “walkable” but I’d say the Heights is more than most areas.

So far from reading online it sounds like Pearland is a good option but I have not been able to validate that/ figure out what other options are out there. I would appreciate all advice:
1. Would you recommend living in Pearland?
2. What are other good areas to live in? Safe and would like to be less than 1 hour from Galveston.
