I don’t have the best advice on how handle the upgrade downgrade question. But I would get another credit card for your credit history’s sake. The chase freedom unlimited card is free and pretty solid. You can transfer UR between the two so if you wanted to use them for travel you could transfer them to CSR
Yes you can do that. Make sure when you call them you say you want to downgrade your current CSR to the free chase credit card. This is so you don’t loose your current points. Confirm with them by downgrading you’ll still keep your points!
If you get a freedom card now, you can transfer points to that card and get the freedom sign up bonus. You could ask them to roll part of your reserve credit line into that card if you can take the credit history length hit on closing.
First option should be to call chase and explain that you’d like to keep the card but maybe they could waive the fee for you this year given the situation and limited benefits advantage, and you’ll cover it next year.
(contd) Currently not expecting travel and or spend on travel/restaurants due to COVID and WFH e.g. LYFT rides. Likely will mostly be budget grocery purchases on the card if anything... I'm leaning to cancel/downgrade the CSR to avoid this fee for now... is this my best option? Can I downgrade to a free card and then upgrade later if I start travelling and having expenses again?
Also I'm unlikely to use UR points for anything other than cash back (unless you have other ideas?) - just not a big spender outside of work, and won't really be able to use points on travel/vacation over the next year to gain from the conversion bonus there.
Same boat but decided not to cancel as its a good card overall. My renewal date is May. They're giving a $100 credit for the annual fee, which puts it back to the orginal $450. $300 travel credit will be good until next May, and while I'm not likely to go anywhere soon, I know I'll take at least a flight or two over the holidays/next year to see my family. They just announced for May and June 5x points for groceries, which is where my money is getting spent these next two months. Then hopefully we're back to some sense of normalcy with restuarants over the next few months. To me still a good deal for the card for now.
Your travel credit is part of the card benefits. The statement credit was a "courtesy" of chase based on Covid-19, I think they started with the April to July renewals, but if you didn't get a message about it I'd call and ask, the worse they can say is no.

Downgrade to CSP. Don't close. You can also open new cards for SUBs.

I was on the same boat in April. I wouldn’t downgrade cause you earned all those points and they won’t be the same value
Not completely accurate. UR points are UR points. The best value is usually obtained by transferring to a partner, like Hyatt.
