In a situation like that you should have just cut the person's mic and moved on. If the on-air person had any experience they would have adapted on the fly. If the person is raving about something random there's nothing to save about the interview. If it's at the level of a prank caller, you just end it.
The best save is redirecting fast with a neutral but firm question. A calm anchor who cuts back to the main point without escalating is gold. Silence or freezing just makes it worse.
