My live stream today was a mess. The guest started yelling and raving about something totally random, and my anchor looked totally lost. In a live, breaking news environment, what's the best way to "save" an interview when the guest goes completely off the rails?

In a situation like that you should have just cut the person's mic and moved on. If the on-air person had any experience they would have adapted on the fly. If the person is raving about something random there's nothing to save about the interview. If it's at the level of a prank caller, you just end it.

The best save is redirecting fast with a neutral but firm question. A calm anchor who cuts back to the main point without escalating is gold. Silence or freezing just makes it worse.

Greetings from Madison, Wisconsin. I'm a reporter with more than 32 years of experience and I feel that, lately, local television news has been kind of dead, but I am pleased to fight for it from my local newspaper. Locals love to see someone from their own town succeeding or finding out something inspiring.

I am a firm believer that this will not change for a long time, local TV will continue to live as long as we stand for it.

One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer. Job duties are primarily project management and editing/proofreading. As the first read on articles, they need to have an understanding of the material (business/regulation).
