My office has this unlimited PTO policy, but every time someone actually tries to take a week off, they get grilled about their workload. My manager literally asked me to justify why I needed five days off for my own wedding last month. I’d much rather have a set 15 days that I can actually use without being interrogated. Is unlimited PTO always a trap, or is it just my specific company that sucks?

Your specific company sucks. Even if you went to a set amount of PTO tomorrow, that attitude won’t change. I’ve worked at plenty of places where it was a nightmare to try and take your time off. How PTO is structured doesn’t matter.

I think you’re right that culture matters more than the policy itself. A supportive manager makes a bigger difference than whatever’s written in the handbook.

I’d say it’s your company. My manager says we need to take at least 4 weeks but we can take more if needed. If anything, your company needs to give a set number of weeks that managers can’t grill you about then additional weeks depend on team availability/load. Still not unlimited though, flexible is what it is.

Unlimited PTO only works if the culture actually supports people using it. If you have to justify normal time off, it kind of defeats the purpose. That sounds exhausting.
