$3,500 - $4,000 per month.

If you’re young and don’t have a lot of expenses, M1 is on point. I think $4,500 - $5,000 would provide a very comfortable life as a single in any neighborhood in LA. It’s difficult to find apartments, even studios, for less than $2,500 a month in Venice/Santa Monica. My expenses are always ~$2,500 and I’m not an extravagant person.

Yeah for sure, SM is where you can’t really get out of paying a premium for the location, beach etc.
Interpreting basic to mean low cost but still effective (and I'll assume a bit higher quality), the following breakdown is what I averaged per month for a 2bd living by myself 3 blocks off the beach in south bay over 3yrs:
Housing: 2k
Food: 200 for groceries, 300 for going out 4/month
Transportation: 100 for gas when I drive to client site and for personal use, budgeted 1k/yr for maintenance (I bought a used car in cash for 6.5k)
Phone: 20 (my share of family plan using military rates)
Internet: 70 for cheapest Spectrum
Other considerations:
Dating increases food costs and LA girls are their own category
Flying internationally out of LA is expensive except to Mexico, but it's cheaper and more fun to drive to Baja
1bd and studios don't really go under 1.5/month except in less nice areas, so you're better off with a 1bd or 2bd for a little extra for the space and convenience. I've had a lot of friends visit and stay a few days and an extra room is just less hassle than having someone on the couch in the living room
How did you get such an affordable 2bd?
Thank you guys. Very helpful
