I’ve done this. Knock on your favorite partner’s door. Tell them why, and when. I’ve done it and in the end they told me they had been planning to move me anyway even before I asked.
Same. Find a partner in your corner both at the office you’re leaving and the one where you plan to move. My mentor was so relieved I was not leaving the firm he was happy to help me. 8 years later it’s still great.
I’ve done the same, with a partner on my side in both the original office and the incoming office. It’s stressful to walk into the door and ask straight out what you want, but if you have your reasons, a business case and are appreciated for your work then all will be fine (I personally did it cross-jurisdictional, which made it even more stressful). The only tip I’d give is to be patient and bear in mind that it may not always be exactly what you’re asking / looking for (ie maybe they start you off with a secondment or a trial period). It’s important to be flexible with this type of ask.
Thank you both. That’s helpful.
