She has the kid all day? Drag your butt outta bed, change the kid, toss them to mom for a snack, snooze for 10, get up, put kid back.
My wife and I agreed that I handled the baby when I got home until around 11pm, then she takes the night shift. That worked well for us and on weekends I took the early shifts and let her sleep in where possible to catch-up.
Wife work or stay at home?
My wife doesn’t work, so we split. When I get home, I start taking care of the baby and house chores until midnight or 1, and let my wife sleep early. Then we swap and my wife take cares of the baby as needed through the night. I get about 6 hours undisrupted of sleep which is enough while my wife get about the same, in intervals.
OP- I'm coming up on same plan for leave. Third go round for us though. The other thing that worked well for us is just communication a grabby attitude (trying to claim more scope when you can). Big meeting tomorrow? Wife would often volunteer for the whole night. Day after steerco / breather for me? I'd come home at 4 so she could escape to Starbucks for an hour. Good luck
#dealwithit. Your relationship with sleep is now different.
Anything more involved, take 20 minute shifts rocking. That's the limit of anyone's patience.
Mom is on leave for 4 more months, and I’m taking 2 months leave when she goes back to work. I definitely plan on giving her a break when I get home in the evenings. Just worried about situations where he fusses for long stretches in the middle of the night.
K1 and B1 - Thanks. Good strategies. I assume this is going to be a trial and error period of different approaches the first few weeks while we figure out what works for us all.
Go to bed early like 9 pm when you can
Agree M2. Sleep is for the week. I meant weak.
OP: before I had my daughter, I could not live without 8 hour sleep. Now I am ok with 5 hours.. you will learn
Sleep when they sleep, don't make excuses
Agree with P2. If I get 8 hours sleep now (after 4 kids), I feel like I wasted half my morning.
Night doula
Coffee
It goes real quick and you’ll miss it
Just have to bite the bullet. You won’t get much sleep but it will pass.
