That’s so stupid lol. I totally understand energy not being right or not having the proper skills. But not sending a thank you is a deal breaker?? Lol that’s so dumb on the company’s part. It’s a business at the end of the day. And the goal is for you to find the right candidate to help maintain and grow the business. Not to stroke your egos. If you’re gonna let a highly skilled an experienced candidate pass you by because they didn’t send a “thank you,” you’re just an idiot.
Personally, I never send thank yous. I interview well, I know my stuff, I have a good personality that shows during the interview so the hiring team knows very quick I’m good and easy to work with, while I also have the right skills. And I have never had an issue landing a job within my skill set and scope. And as a hiring manager myself, if during the interview me and my team have already determined you’re not the right fit, sending a “thank you” isn’t going to change that lol. And on the flipside, if we’ve determined you are the right fit, you’ll still be hired even if you don’t send the thank you.
Bottom line, let’s focus on things that actually matter when it comes to hiring. And not look for an ego boost
The problem is not lack of thank you notes —it is the BS salary threshold and the fact they only have 2-10 employees but still think they are game-changers in an already crowded market. No thank you.
What's even crazier is that this person thought putting this line about not hiring people because of thank you notes was a brilliant thing to post for others to see
On the flip side, I sent a written thank you note after an in-person interview and the interviewer was so impressed that he:
- called me to tell me how it made me stand out
- personally referred me to a role that was a better fit (I accepted and worked there for 4 years before heading to b school)
- mentored me in said role
- stayed in touch with me during b school (which was during the 2008 downturn) and offered his help when the company froze MBA hiring; made several calls to get me interviews
- remains a mentor to this day
Small details can matter. And it wasn’t a long note. 3 sentences max.
