This is so real. The fact that we’re made to feel guilty for being sick says more about the system than the worker. Rest shouldn’t feel like a failure—being human isn’t an inconvenience.
Conversation Starter
Exactly. Rest isn’t a moral failure, it’s literally part of being human. The system makes it feel personal when it shouldn’t.
I no longer feel bad when I have to take care of myself. Nobody is thinking about me when they are calling out and doing what is best for them. You do not have to earn rest, remember that.

This 👏 taking care of yourself doesn’t need permission. Work will figure it out like it always does.
I totally sympathize with this concept, I hate it because the challenege is to have to reconfigure job responsibilities that has to be done daily. IT CANNOT NOT BE DONE, also labor limitations make it near impossible to fill roles, lastly, these jobs may be skill specific, not anyone can make pasta, or bake madeleines.
It may come down to the point in which the chef may have to fill in for that spot. among all the other responsibilities that are beset onto that role.
As much as i hate it when people call out, they need it. for what ever reason.

I get that too. It’s frustrating when work still has to get done, but sick is sick people shouldn’t have to push through it.
The anxiety of having to go to work when I’m not well is so much greater than the guilt-and the relief of the moments after calling out is so great, I can actually rest.
I only feel guilty when I have caused my own malady by over indulging the night before

That relief after calling out is so real. If you’re not well, resting is the right call no explanation needed.
My job literally will not allow me to be out sick or allow anyone to really.. even management like there’s just a mentality of show up or get attendance points, I think so many people have called out and abused the system that there’s no room for leniency at this point. I will say they are good about sending you home if you come in and are truly too sick to be there..
If I ran a company I think I’d be understanding unless it was a pattern 💔

That sounds exhausting. A little understanding goes a long way, especially when someone genuinely needs time and it’s not a pattern.
Go ahead and call in sick. It was a sick time is for if the company is understaffed or busy. It’s not on you.

Haha, right? Some days you just gotta put yourself first.
It's a truth. Attendance shouldn't even be counted against an employee at any company. How can any employee be considered reliable or hard working if they aren't making sure to take care of the self also. The attendance policies contradict mental and personal well being.
This is so true and frustrating.

Yes! It’s so frustrating how they make you feel guilty for taking care of yourself

I used to feel guilty, but not anymore. Well, now that I’m a manager, it’s shifted to a bit of worry, like is my team going to be ok?

I hear that! Being on the other side really gives you a new perspective.
I don’t feel bad about calling in sick. Company sometimes see us only as a number instead of an actual person.
I am going to start using my vacation in PTO. As well as start looking for a new job jobs.

That’s completely valid. Rest can bring way more clarity than pushing through burnout.
