Yes, I took STD for 4 months for my mental health. Looking back, I was in far worse shape mentally than I realized and the ability to take leave most likely saved my life.
For approval, I connected with HR to get the low down on the process, provided completed forms from my psychiatrist to STD insurance, started my leave using PTO, spoke with the STD nurse to "validate" my claim, and waited for 2 weeks to get confirmation of approval. That wait made my anxiety through the roof! I was also put on FMLA at the same time so I could relax that I was coming back to a job.
I had to have my leave revalidated monthly since my doctor would say I needed more time than STD would approve (she initially said 2 months, they approved 1). Doc just basically copied the prior month form and added any updates as needed. STD said they 'needed' her actual notes of what we discussed during my check ins with her and corresponding counseling sessions with a counselor, but doc refused their request in order to keep my privacy since the form she filled out provided them with "more than enough information to approve my claim" (her words). FYI, I've been going to this psychiatrist for 8 years so there's plenty of history to back my claim.
I actively saw a counselor twice a week the entire time I was on leave at my psychiatrist's recommendation. This helped to ensure STD and myself that I was doing what was necessary to take care of myself rather than staying in bed all day like I really wanted to do... and I did that the other 5 days a week for the first 2 months. 😕
STD is a part of our compensation packages, and one that we shouldn't be afraid to take just because people can't see our illness on the outside. Take care of yourself first and foremost; work will be there when you're ready to return. I hope everything works out and that you're in a better place soon!
Your psychiatrist would know. I declined but she clearly knew what to write for it. My daughter (who has the same bipolar) got papers to take a leave and study accommodations in NYU. Her psychiatrist wrote those.
I have never done it, but is there a way you could ask someone in your HR department? Do you know if someone in your firm has done it before?
No I don’t know anyone. Due to the stigma and the lack of trust I have in it staying confidential I don’t want to mention it to anyone until I know more about what it would entail. A catch 22 I suppose
How much leave can you be on? I suppose as long as you need because there isn’t an end date to a mental health incident/issue/illness/crisis etc.
