Okay guys should I take a pay cut to move to industry? Cut is 13k but I’m looking for better WLB. Currently in partnership tax with 6 YOE and I’m done with tax season and the forced RTO. this new job can give me exposure to corp tax and provision and is fully remote.

Wlb and remote are huge. However, I would be worry about growth, if they are already paying you the high range, is there much growth at all?

likesmart

What is inportant to you in this phase of life? More or flexibility? And it doesn’t have to be for forever- who knows a year or 2 from now, you might get something that matches or exceeds your current pay

like

Fully remote + better WLB is worth a lot. And public acctg pay is outpacing industry right now so they might just be at the top of what they can give. You said they are offering the high end of the range so I feel like that’s a good faith offer, they clearly value you. As long as there is good growth opportunity at the company/it’s a good resume builder I would take it.

I’m currently in industry and I would be happy to take a 13k pay cut to be full remote. I’m in NY metro area, commute sucks, and house is too expensive here

like

Are you considering public

Nice. Was that their first offer? Is there no way to push back to decrease that pay cut?

With that experience, you always negotiate!! Shit, I have interns negotiating. lol

likefunny

When I moved I asked for more than the high end of the range plus a signing bonus. It’s all how you negotiate. Granted I did this last year where the market was a little bit better

I did as well when I was doing all this.

Hi All,

Need some career advice.

I have a year of experience in a clinical ops role where learning is quite stagnant. I’m eagerly looking to transition to good challenging opportunities in life science consulting/analytics and allied domains. Which organisations/startups/roles should one apply to being a non-technical applicant with a masters in biotechnology?

It would be really helpful to get your guidance on further course of action.

TIA!

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

I like my current job, company and public accounting. I know I am being underpaid at $70k as a senior tax associate with 2-3 years of experience as I have talked with my local peers as well as local recruiters. Also, I know outside hires to my company get paid about $5-$10k higher than me, but they don’t get a raise the following year. My question is what is everyone’s experience with company hopping to get a pay bump within public accounting?

Am I understanding utilization rate correctly? It’s chargeable time over total time? Charged 40 hours and had 10 hours non-charge so my utilization is 80%? If so, wouldn’t it benefit me to understate non-charge hours so my utilization is higher since they only really care about chargeable time anyways? Charge 40 hours still but only put 5 hours non-charge for utilization to be 89% instead of 80%? Or am I misunderstanding how utilization works?
