I’ve tried Frayer on Google slides. Put in enough slide templates for your class and make it editable. Then pop in a second blank slide for them to find 3-5 words with the prefix, suffix, or root and have them use in a paragraph. (You can choose a subject or theme if you want or they can choose.) Each individual or pair is assigned one off the list, collaborates on the template and paragraph (I give feedback on usage), and then presents to the class. I then take the list of prefixes, suffixes, and roots and put them into a Kahoot or Gimkit. So they specialize, but they are also responsible for learning from their peers. When doing writing tasks, require them to use a particular # of words with the target prefixes, suffixes, or roots or choose words for them. I have also had kids take all the vocab on the list and create a quick sketch to perform. It works best to put a time limit of 7 minutes: They need a setting, characters, a clear beginning, middle, and end and have to use at least 4-6 of the targeted vocab.
There are also traditional books-Vocab. from Greek and Latin from Prestwick House. I love them, but it’s not PC in my district anymore. I have considered going rogue and bringing that back. So much these days is predicated on kids reading widely, but I still think there’s a place for formal vocabulary instruction, especially for college-bound students.
I’ve done the prefixes and suffixes with the Frayer method. This year the change has been 4 prefixes/suffixes over 2 weeks, option 1: each student is assigned a word with a class google slides from the prefix/suffix they define, give part of speech, sentence and add a picture that helps showcase the definition. Option 2: put students in pairs they create a quick skit to share with the word, they share the definition, part of speech. After each skit ask students for a synonym of that word/to define it in their own words. Option 3: have students create a quizlet or booket (sp) to quiz their peers for the words.
Then I test them after 2 weeks.
Thank you four these awesome ideas!
I have them draw a symbol for each root/prefix/suffix. Every day I put up a word that uses elements from our present list. They also have premade sentences to complete using words that contain our focus elements, and they do research to find additional words. Our quizzes include the elements from previous lists as well. They also write paragraphs correctly using the elements and adding context clues for each. I do these as bell ringers essentially and give them 10 minutes each day to work on the exercises.
I do a little activity with the word parts each day. I put the word parts on quizlet so they can play games and study the flash cards. I also have them do things like Word Squares, Pictionary, Word Part Bingo, Crossword Puzzles, Pantomime, Gimkit, Blooket, etc. Studies show that students need ten encounters with the words before they can remember them.
Thank you very much for your terrific details about teaching word parts. I probably just haven’t taken it far enough. I will definitely try this idea.
