It seemed like a great Olympics to me. The Tokyo games were a year late because of Covid, and even then there was something off about them. Paris just looked great throughout, the venues were impressive, and the athletes did some amazing things. It seemed that they were presented to the public in a way that kept people engaged. I think a lot of people will be disappointed this week that they don't have more events to look forward to every day.
Honestly I really haven't watched that much of it (I'm embarrassed to say), but the meme cycles have been very good so if you count that as part of the marketing campaign, then I think they're doing a great job. I'm loving the break dancing memes I've been seeing this weekend 😂
I am right there with you OP I would give it an A as well. I felt like the Olympics were really hyped up and I felt like it brought a lot of different people together all cheering on the USA. I felt like people were more excited about these Olympics than any other one I can remember before.
I’d give the storytelling an A, marketing a C.
But the broadcast information execution from NBC is a horrendous F.
They did a horrible job placing a roadmap to consumers of where they can watch the games. And because they did such a lack job of being diligent with displaying the right information of games on their streaming assets and online, all they could do was confide in throwing all the “high viewing sports” under Primetime. That’s lazy to me, because they’re forcing the consumers to watch what they dictate it’s important.
The TEAM USA social page did a MARVELOUS job with displaying what time events were on in the (EST) time zone. I’ll drop differences between the lackluster marketing assets between peacock, NBC and team USA below. And my favorite part about team USAs page is that they were consistently on time with posting the schedule.
I believe due to the MASSIVE merging and layoffs, NBC didn’t have the marketing support they usually come with. For instance, I was looking forward to their social pages sharing a lot more BTS moments of the athletes like they’ve done in prior years. Instead, they’ve offloaded that to the athletes themselves to blog. Which I love, but they didn’t share any of that content on their pages. :/
Why? When they made this huge deal about NBCU empowering creators. I’m not going TikTok to follow them. Instagram is the dominant social domain authority. Share your athletes stories on your IG pages. COME ON! WHERE WAS KAI CENANT? 😆 https://www.nbcsports.com/pressbox/press-releases/nbcuniversal-to-send-27-creators-to-olympic-games-paris-2024-in-partnership-with-meta-overtime-snapchat-tiktok-and-youtube
And more efforts went into promoting their Peacock assets (which is another $5.99) ontop of the regular streaming or cable you already pay for, to rewatch games or watch games that are not being aired on NBC.
I could write a whole case study about this. It was just a hot mess of execution wise for disemenstion of information.
But they brought in a bunch of ad revenue I hear! So win for them? 🥴
