Overheard a senior partner giving brutal advice to a new associate: "Forget work-life balance, your only goal is to bill as much as possible." Is that what success really means in this field?

Success is business origination or getting out of insurance litigation. Billers are fungible.

like

Yup

No. Billing 2500 hours will be forgotten January 1st of the next year. In ID success equals your book of business. Bill enough to get bonuses and make partner but I recommend spending at least an hour a day on developing business.

Ha, very true!

I think success is measured in a lot of ways, and what constitutes a successful career differs from person to person. For some it might be high billables, but for others it might be helping clients, advocating for new laws/rules/social change, writing and contributing to legal scholarship, etc. You got to find what matters to you.

What is the CTC range for in-house Senior Analyst ?

Hi ! I have gotten an offer via email for what I believe is level 9 data visualization specialist in the dc area. I have a masters and 3.5 years of consulting experience. I’ve gotten an initial offer and trying to get some context on what the range is for this and whether I should push for more or accept. It is 5,000 above what I said my minimum was, but is significantly more than my current salary. Thanks for any input :)

Riddle me this Batman: Im told that I can bill X amount for X task but no more, or warned that I may not plan and prepare for certain things even though I do (lost time) Exhibit A: Can’t bill to plan and prepare a motion or pleading, plus bill for the drafting of the document. Seems not grounded in reality to me.

I work in insurance. I was working for an Allstate agent and was fired the day after my grandmothers funeral for being “unenthusiastic in our morning meeting”. Now I’m having anxiety searching for a job. I don’t think I want to sell anymore yet every single recruiter I interview with says I should, that I have a “salesperson mentality”. I’m burnt out. Has anyone else felt this way? How did handle it? Is there a different career path I can take or am I destined to sell insurance forever?
