Many people aren’t great at pivot tables
Most people aren’t, agreed. 3+ YOE seniors at a reputable CPA firm who struggle with pivots, it leaves a person wondering.
Firms outside the top 10 really struggle to attract good talent at the junior staff and senior levels. Smaller firms are much more attractive to more experienced PA lifers than less experienced staff looking to get experience and figure out what they want to do with their careers.
Rough… But yea if your personal life is better I guess you gotta decide now if you want to go back into the higher pace of a potentially better trained firm or maybe a public industry client. It’s tough when you think about how you’re the average of those around you and you feel like you’re lowering your own average. If it’s convenient and you can get another job maybe keep looking. If it’s better to just chill right now let that ego go.
Pro
Depends what your long term plans are. Talent at the smaller firms in more experienced positions (5+ YOE) is much better.
My guidance… enjoy being the one eyed king.
Think it depends. If the smaller firm recruits almost exclusively from big 4 or larger firms, you may be surrounded by the same types of people vs if they are primarily recruited out of college, you may see the types of people that copied your hw in college. Depends on the geo too. Biggest misconception though is that the smaller the firm, the less you will have to work. Make sure you do your due diligence. Some firms offer wlb, some are run by a founder who is looking for profits and growth like everyone else.
