People always say FAANG but I rarely see mentions of Netflix...is it just because it’s a handy acronym?

I’m voting for the following solution: switch Netflix for tesla. After google converted to alphabet we would only need an R... company to get a perfect acronym: FAAART. Sorry for the childish humor, but I would really appreciate that Acronym all over the financial newspapers.

What does FAANG even stand for?

Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, google.

It’s because it’s much harder to get a job at Netflix. They only take the best of the best (for SWEs at least)

Netflix is a tier or two above FB/ Goog both on terms of difficulty to get in and total comp.

@C3 basic supply demand I believe. Netflix hires the best for each role and only looks at senior candidates. As a result they have way fewer roles open at any point in time. They are also more willing to pay top of the band than FB or Goog. They also ask people to leave for under performing at higher rates than other tech firms. It's a very open and sometimes brutal culture.

My proposed solution is FANTA: Facebook Amazon Netflix Tesla Apple. Might I also suggest WANTA: Walt Disney, Adobe, Nike, Target, American Express. =WANTAFANTA

It doesn't super belong, but was a beast of a stock for so many years that they included it despite its smaller size

Without the N it’s a slur. Netflix has lead the way in massive infrastructure automation. I could argue much of how the cloud is shaping out is due to their demands as a customer.

Now it’s just FAAAT, Tesla has been added and Google is Alphabet

Can’t rearrange to GAAF? Or is there some logic to the ordering of the letters currently?

And Microsoft should be in there so FAAAM

At what point is it considered optimal to make the jump from Big4 to FAANG? I've been a Tech Consultant at EY for a little under a year and, while I like the company very much, I do very little actual technical work. Experienced hire, Senior, 130k base. I'm very tempted to jump over to Amazon (despite their reputation for frugality). Do I attempt to make the switch now or wait until I get promoted to Manager?

Just got another rejection... Is exiting to FAANG or MB really this hard? Trying to go tech.. or mbb, but not getting anywhere. I have 2 masters (mba, ms) from top schools, been in consulting for over 10 years, I am confident that I know my stuff well..but still I keep getting rejected. Interviewed with Google, Amazon, Cisco, McKinsey, and a few others and every-time there is something that is not a match... are the hiring managers looking for like 100% match? That will never happen!!!

Finally watched The Social Dilemma on Netflix. It didn’t say anything that we didn’t already know about social media and big tech, but it’s still alarming and worth the watch. The biggest question I have after watching is why do people still romanticize FAANG? Is just purely the money and prestige? Are we selling our soul for a highly regarded exit opportunity? Just curious.

I’m being let go. It came as a surprise because my time with the company I’ve gotten positive feedback. A couple of weeks ago my boss told me that I was being put on a 30 day performance review plan. The last 2 weeks I’ve gotten positive feedback about improvement but on Thursday my boss decided to cut the review plan short and give me an end date. Since I’ve been there <1 year I’m getting 2 weeks severance. Is there room for severance negotiation? A friend in HR (not ad) told me I should ask.

Some of these posts are ridiculous. They’re like just exited consulting to FAANG/Niche Startup with $150k base and $400k TC with 6 months of experience, you can do it too! Then they ghost or explain that they are a former SWE 😬 coming from MBB. Going to some super Niche role that people with crazy backgrounds are recruited for. Congrats, but not everyone has that background

Feeling blah. Got an offer and turned it down (I wouldn’t have taken), and told this other company that I got an offer, which resulted in the recruiter speeding up my 2nd interview. After the interview, they said that they’d need another interview and to speak to my refs before going forward, and that if I have an offer, they don’t want me to hold me back from taking it. Mind’s kind of in a jumble after this long process. Thoughts from my fellow fish?

How do you approach asking senior managers/directors/partners about writing recommendation letters? I'm applying to law school in the fall and I need some. For what it's worth I'm a second year staff at a mid-size firm, have had good reviews the entire time/known as a high-performer in my office, and I've worked directly with everybody I'm planning on asking. However, none of them know that I'm planning on applying.
