People in industry, how much time do you actually spend working? I know month end is a grind, but I’m asking about a typical non-month end week

I'm in tax, so month end isn't stressful for us. But the fall can be a little more with the extended deadlines. But we are in control of our own schedules, so I hardly do over 40, get 7 weeks of vacation I take, and I've been with my large employer for over 10 years and am grandfathered into their pension. So hard to find pensions these days, so I doubt I will ever leave.

This will vary tremendously on the actual position and the organization. I've been in private, nonprofit, fractional, and PE involved organizations. I have yet to see adequate staffing that allows for full usage of PTO. I have been in situations where I worked 50 hours per week, 60 hours per week, and am closer to 40-45 right now. I seriously envy the lucky people who have consistently experienced adequate bandwidth to utilize their full PTO.

Q end can feel like a busy season week. Outside of that 20-25 hours of actual work.

It really depends on the week, but on a normal one, I’d say maybe 4-5 solid hours of real work a day? The rest is meetings, emails, and “looking busy.” Month-end, though? That’s survival mode. Curious to hear what others say, feels like it varies a lot by industry and company culture.

For me probably a solid 40-45 hours of work a week, but I’m a one person tax department. I’ve been in jobs in private before where we were tremendously overstaffed and we had 50-80% downtime year round. It all depends on the position, firm, and staffing

Oh yeah and I’m replying for an industry tax job (not accounting with a typical month end close), if that wasn’t obvious

Busier times a year, like 55 hours, slower times a year 20-25 actual hours of work

I’ve worked at companies where year end was 2 weeks at 65 hours, quarter ends were a week at 55 hours, month ends were about 50 hours, and everything else was about 25 hours a week of actual work.

I’ve also worked at companies where month, quarter, and year ends all run 40 hours, and during a normal week we only had 15 hours of actual work.

Currently I’m going closer to 40 hours per week year round since we’re pretty efficient for close, but I have a lot more special projects and manager tasks that take up my time outside of close.

So it depends.

My total federal withholding tax last year was approximately $12k and this year I will have 40% more in reported income on my employer W2 and anticipate higher that $12k federal withholding for my new job. Or is it that They think I’m inefficient?
