I think OP is not saying girlboss like she was arrogant and full of herself she is saying she was ambitious and worked her ass off to get to group director level and now is happy to stay there. OP, I think should speak to how you love where you are, how you are continuing to deliver wins and ROI, how your successful mastery of industry changes continue to keep you challenged and how your maturity supports the success of your teams and has given you perspective that delivering strong work is the thing that gives you most satisfaction. As far as goals perhaps speak to how you want to wait for just the right role that leverages your xyz strengths (eg a certain category or focus on something that they will be hard pressed to deliver if you really don’t want to get to the next level).
I’m sorry, you girl bossed a little too close to the sun, but maybe not every woman has. I completely understand just wanting to do your job and get your bonus.
You want to stay relevant so the only way you can do that is to improve your skills continuously.
Be aware of your brand and let your work speak for itself, and if it doesn’t for some reason, make sure you claim it to show others you’re worth. You will still have to do this in order to claim your bonus.
You’re right! Instead of “we” I should’ve just said “I”.
Not bad at all. And not “too old”. It’s the end of the year… let’s talk about it in the new year feeling.
I have several folks working for me right now that for whatever reason where they are is ok for the season that they are in. (Kids, health, great team, etc)
I think the first conversation should be what does the next year of my life look like. Then the conversation should be if I’m still doing this job in 3 years, would I want to throw my computer off the Empire State Building?
Growth for maintaining your position (aka learning how to use Ai chat prompts and how to understand Gen Z.) is much different than trying to move up the next rung on the career ladder.
You know how you operate.
For me, I need something new (challenge, something to learn, or new role) every 2 years…. I start getting the itch for it about 1.5 years in. But if I really like the people, I can do 3-4 years.
It’s actually not bad at all. Wanting stability instead of constant “growth” is normal, especially after years of pushing yourself. Career growth doesn’t have to mean climbing the ladder—sometimes it just means getting better at what you already do, staying reliable, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
The whole girl boss / you have a brand is exhausting to work around and with as a people manager and WIT veteran —-just focus on performing your job at a high standard and mastering skill. This includes both functional and business acumen. You don’t sound old, you sound like you now seeing the challenges that lie ahead of you and are nearing burnout if you are not careful.
