Plaintiff attorneys that switched over from defense - how do you like it? What things do you like/dislike more? I’m on defense now thinking about switching to plaintiffs side but not sure

Things I like more - the pay, how I am treated, more resources (admin staff, legal software, etc)

Things I don't like - high billables and difficulty taking time off bc of said high billables.

Yea! Plaintiff attorney for five years and almost two years on the defense side now. Yep... that's things I like/ don't like about being on the defense side. I also enjoy a bigger firm environment more than I thought.

I have more autonomy and the practice focuses more on important things. That makes it more fulfilling professionally for me.
The annoying things for me are that you usually have less time and resources (fewer juniors to research stuff to death), and lose more.

like

Associate 2 - would you say your work life balance is better working for plaintiffs even though the less time on tasks can be stressful?

I was plaintiffs and switched to defendants. I like the pay, the independence I have, my colleague and the firm culture better. However, billable hrs are killing me and I don’t know if it’s worth it tbh. In terms of work life balance, I was told there would be more on the defense side but billable hrs make that an illusion. Thinking of going in house

like

That’s good. How long have you had the job with the 1800 billable requirement?

I love no longer having insane billable hours…I like that I have lots more autonomy. The work is more fulfilling. Clients can sometimes be unreasonable/difficult, but I’d much rather deal with that than constantly hounding adjusters to get me sh%t or give me authority to do necessary things (or to settle a case that should never have gone to litigation in the first place). The work life balance, for me, is far superior. I enjoy practicing law again. It was pretty miserable doing defense work and having to deal with insurers…and difficult partners who often did not encourage growth and instead used me as a paper pusher while they got all the FaceTime. Also, did I mention that I love not having insane billable hours anymore? Lol 🤣

I don’t think I’ll ever go back to defense civil litigation/insurance defense.

Sounds great! And best of luck! Always happy to answer any questions you may have ☺️

Former defense atty who made the switch to plaintiffs side and I love it. I think so much of it depends on the specific firms though (although can we all agree insurance companies are the worst clients??). I’m at a mid-size plaintiffs firm (around 26 attys in 2 offices) and I do have to bill my time but it’s nothing like the slog that is defense billing. More of just keeping track generally how much time I worked on each case for attys fees/profitability reasons, so I cannot stress how much less stressful it is than defense billing. I was also micromanaged to death at my old firm (could not even send out simple emails to a client as a third year without them being run by the partner - junior partners couldn’t either sometimes lol) and I enjoy the client interaction on the plaintiffs side much more (yes you have to wade through some crazies). Much more autonomy and the pay is much better (if you’re at a successful firm, the bonuses will be big). Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions about making the switch!

You’re very welcome! You’re totally voicing a lot of the same concerns I had in my 3rd year right before I made the switch. I craved more autonomy, client interaction, etc. and then I moved to my current firm and I basically hit the ground running, quickly moving to running my cases entirely and I love it! I will say a lot of Plaintiff’s firms don’t bill, because people who have interviewed with us / lateraled have been concerned about that part, so I wouldn’t worry about that part too much (sounds like we are more of the exception than the norm). Happy to answer any more questions as you go!

Buy/lease now or defer to Q1-2023?

My car broke (engine seized, 10y old). I am interested in 530i ($62k price), however 3year lease is $1,000+ monthly (with $5k down). Monthly lesse payment is 50% more than bmw advertised offers (“south FL dealers are not participating in the program”)

Q to car gurus/experts- should I defer purchase/lease for 6 months? My logic, the impending recession will reduce demand and we will go back to more balanced market (lower prices with negotiation).

Anyone know a Connecticut or 2nd circuit case for this rule? I can’t find one to save my life. A defendant generally is liable for all harmful results that are the normal incidents of and within the increased risk caused by their negligent acts.
